The Multi-Strain Myth
A common marketing tactic in the supplement industry is the "kitchen sink" approach: cramming 15 different strains into a single capsule and advertising "50 Billion CFU."
The Microbiological Reality
- Antagonism: Bacteria compete for resources. Certain Lactobacillus strains produce bacteriocins that actively kill Bifidobacteria in the same capsule during storage.
- Dilution of Efficacy: If a clinical trial showed efficacy at 10 Billion CFU of Strain A, but your multi-strain blend contains 1 Billion CFU of Strain A mixed with 14 other cheap strains, you will not achieve the clinical outcome.
Formulations must be rational, synergistic, and dose-matched to the primary literature.
